A Postmodern Witch’s Guide to Litha
In which we reckon with the spiritual impact of climate change
Tomorrow is the Summer Solstice and, with nary a second to spare, I’ve published A Postmodern Witch’s Guide to Litha. This zine would not have happened without Cecily Sailer, and I am so grateful to Sasha West for letting us reprint her poetry. This is the first time I’ve collaborated on one of these guides, and the process was a pleasure. There were a few twists and turns on the way to putting everything together and getting it printed—so many twists and turns that I wondered if this publication was cursed. Fear not, though, because I was finally able to get the first print run into the mail yesterday, and it turns out that I got exactly the right number of copies for the first wave of orders plus contributor copies pretty much by accident.
Cecily is the woman behind Typewriter Tarot, and it’s through Typewriter Tarot that I got to know her. She’s a Tarot reader, as you might expect, but she’s also a mentor and a community leader. Cecily is gathering her Creative Coven for Litha tomorrow. It’s free, and you can find details here.
Sasha is a poet and a teacher and a mother and a variety of other things. She stares climate change in the face in her latest collection, How to Abandon Ship. The two poems she shares are the creative heart of this zine, and one of the signs from the universe that this zine was meant to be is that we both talk about nostalgia.
I talk about nostalgia as a foundational influence in Neopaganism, and as a force that actually separates us from the season cycle as we experience it now.
If you’d like to read A Postmodern Witch’s Guide to Litha in time for this year’s Summer Solstice, you want the digital edition, which is available as soon as you place an order. I do believe, though, that what Cecily, Sasha, and I have created here will be relevant long after the sun sets on the longest day, so if you prefer print… You still have that option.
Subscribers will find one of my pieces from the zine—an essay about plant medicine and place—below.
